Tra Golfi Sailing Week

This year’s Tre Golfi Sailing Week edition, which will be held from May 14-21 between the gulfs of Sorrento, Naples and Gaeta, dedicates the Mediterranean Championship and the Tyrrhenian National Championship to the ORC fleet.

How exciting is it to sail in the ORC class? The ORC, along with the IRC, is the rating system most frequently applied in offshore racing. Established by the technical body of ISAF, the ORC is in fact the official international standard for rating competitions. This standard takes into account many factors, including the stability of the boat, pitching tendency, sail plan, mast, construction materials, maximum beam, crew weight, etc. In short, the ORC is a rating system that allows sailing yachts to compete at their best, enhancing the value of the boats, the crews and above all uniting fleets of enthusiasts with those of the great champions.

Two championships to celebrate ORC yachts

The ORC boat class will be the focus of two championship titles during the Tre Golfi Sailing Week 2022. The historic race, which takes place from 14th to 21st May in the gulfs of Sorrento, Naples and Gaeta, this year also includes the ORC Mediterranean Championship and the Tyrrhenian National Championship.

The ORC Mediterranean Championship alternates between buoy and offshore racing and starts with a long distance race of around 150 miles, on the same course as the classic Tre Golfi race starting in Naples on Saturday May 14th. This competition will be followed by three days of buoy racing from Thursday 19 to Saturday 21 May in the stretch of sea between Capri and Sorrento. All the inshore races will also be valid to win the title of National Tyrrhenian Champion, a FIV/UVAI trophy that also selects the boats for the Italian Offshore Sailing Championship.

Sailing enthusiasts and professional crews

70 crews have been admitted to the ORC Mediterranean Championship, with more than half of the boats, including many from abroad, having already confirmed their presence at the event. Among them are Giovanni Di Vincenzo’s “Lisa R” with her strong young crew coordinated by Francesco Bertone and Frederic Puzin’s “Daguet” which won the 2021 Rolex Middle Sea Race in ORC. As well as taking place on one of the most beautiful race courses in the world, defined by the great Straulino as the “wind stadium”, the Mediterranean Orc Championship will also be an excellent testing ground for the Orc World Championship to be held at the end of June in Porto Cervo, Sardinia. What better opportunity, then, for non-professional crews to measure themselves against the best in sailing? So, ORC enthusiasts, let’s get started with the entries!
