The announcement had come at the Cannes Yachting Festival, where Italia Yachts had unveiled the project for the first mini maxi in its history. Now more details have been released about the Italia Yachts 20.98, the yard’s new flagship.
An official video presenting the boat reveals some of the “secrets” of the project designed by Cossutti Yacht Design. A boat decidedly in Italia Yachts style, which do not reveal everything but already give us an idea that the boat will have a sporty style. In fact, we can see a moderate freeboard that rises slightly towards the bow, broken up on the sides by long windows that seem to make the boat’s silhouette streamlined.

There are at least two other elements that distinguish the external lines of the boat and in a certain way define it, namely the shape of the deckhouse and the presence of a pronounced bowsprit at the bow. The deckhouse is tapered and harmonised with the deck plan, low, and as in the mini maxis it stops at the stern of the mast to leave the rest of the deck totally free. The bowsprit, on the other hand, “betrays” the boat’s sporting intentions: with such a pronounced bowsprit, the boat will aim to be high performing when sailing downwind. Obviously there will be a double wheel in the cockpit for steering, but the rudder blade is single, coupled with a T-shaped keel that will be offered in various drafts.
Expected to be launched within a year, the Italia Yachts 20.98 will be a very important boat for the Italian yard and could mark its entry into a new market segment.
