It will be Sorrento, and no longer Capri, that will host the Tre Golfi Sailing Week (14-21 May 2022), the historic May race that opens the sailing season in the Gulf of Naples and is considered an unmissable event for offshore sailing. Forecasts are for 150 participants, too many for the capacity of the Marina di Capri, so the organizers have opted for the enchanting Sorrento peninsula. A place famous for its beauty and hospitality: just think that it is the area with the highest density of starred restaurants, counting no less than 10 in a handful of kilometers, and has an enormous hotel capacity.
What’s new at Tre Golfi Sailing Week
The 150-mile “long distance” and the first Maxi European Championship
The Tre Golfi Sailing Week programme has some important new features. The now classic week in May that opens the sailing season in the Gulf of Naples offers the same courses, the 150-mile long distance race combined with the spectacular “coastal” and “stick” races in the mouths of Capri, and the same prestigious, highly coveted prize for the winner: the Rolex Trophy.
Entries close on 30th March, but you need to hurry. A total of 25 yachts are eligible for the Maxi European Championship (an absolute first, the title has never been up for grabs), divided between the various categories, and more than half have already registered.
The maxi yachts will be moored in the port of Marina Piccola in Sorrento, in complete safety thanks also to the considerable depth of the harbour.
Tre Golfi and ORC Mediterranean Championship
There is no limit for those wishing to take part in the 67th Race of the Three Gulfs, which is also open to vintage yachts and yachts with a crew of two, while the ORC Mediterranean Championship accepts a maximum of 70 participants and there are already around 20 entries, representing four nations.
Among them, Beau Geste, TP52 from Hong Kong with Gavin Brady on board; a very high level is expected as these races will be a final test in preparation for the World Championship in Porto Cervo in June.
The marinas of Piano di Sorrento and Sant’Agnello will host the boats participating in the ORC Mediterranean Championship, in the enchanting fishing village of Piano di Sorrento.
