What the guys at Northern Light Composites are “up to,” we’ve told you about it before, now the startup comes up with another innovation, the ecoOptimist. After launching theEco Racer, the first recyclable racing boat, now it is time for the first fully eco Optimist.
It is an idea that has been developed through a new partnership between Northern Light Composites and Germany’s Khulula.eco, which has resulted in the ecoOptimist: the recyclable version of the world’s most popular dinghy.
WHERE TO SEE THE ecoOPTIMIST
At Boot & Fun, heldNov. 11-14 in Berlin, the “naked” version is indeed unveiled. The hull is painted white and cockpit “bare,” with exposed flax fiber. The ecoOptimist is constructed with rComposite technology: that is, linen fibers, Atlas by NMG Europe recycled core, and Elium thermoplastic resin. Bcomp, a Swiss linen fiber company, is part of the project and collaborated in developing the lamination plan and in supplying the Amplitex fibers.
The first complete prototype will be ready to sail in the coming weeks in the Gulf of Trieste, with the goal of bringing the first sailing school hulls across Europe in summer 2022.
PROTAGONISTS SPEAK
“We are happy to present the ecoOptimist project here at Boot & Fun: together with nlcomp we want to spread a new message of sustainability among young sailors and bring the world’s first recyclable boats to the clubs of the German Sailing Federation ,” said Fabio Bignolini of Northern Light Composites.
“It is an honor to be present for the first time in Germany through this new partnership with Khulula.eco. EcoOptimist is a project that wants to launch a revolution in the dinghy market for young sailors and we want to bring the first test boats to sea in the summer of 2022: the goal is to propose a recyclable alternative in the youth classes following the directives of the World Sailing Sustainability Agenda.” Holger Ambroselli of Khulula.eco explained.
