Sea trials for theEuropean Yacht of The Year are underway at Port Ginestra, with 24 competitors competing, the winners of which will be revealed at Boot Dusseldorf 2021.

Among the 21 boats vying for the prize is the Italian De Cesari 33, a design by Giovanni Ceccarelli. A very special boat, both aesthetically and in terms of construction: it has a look reminiscent of classic boats and is made of wood, using the Strip planking technique , which is why it is competing at the European in the “special yachts” category. Strip planking, simplifying, is a construction technique in which strip planking is longitudinally bonded with epoxy resins.

THE DE CESARI 33

Designer Giovanni Ceccarelli and builder. De Cesari, one of the last remaining shipyards in the country capable of building wooden boats, built this 33-footer for owner Aldo Ferruzzi. A boat that has already given good satisfaction both in racing and in its use as an easy unit to sail with family and friends.

Ceccarelli after all is no run-of-the-mill boat designer: in his history as a designer, he has always shown that he pursues refined forms to distinguish his boats from others that are on the market.

This 33-footer, although a boat that follows the day sailer philosophy, that is, designs designed primarily for sailing on fun day trips, the De Cesari 33 is also equipped to offer small cruises. Although it aims to be a classic boat inspired by tradition, it has a modern hull and sail plan, which is also the result of Ceccarelli’s experiences in the America’s Cup.

Built in the Adriatic, the boat was taken to the Tyrrhenian Sea to participate in the Regates Royal and Voiles de St Tropez before being transferred to Spain, by sea and with the owner on board, sailing a total of 500 miles in less than a week. It was an important test, affirming the marine qualities of this ten-meter.
