causes boat accidentsWhat are the main causes of accidents at sea? According to a casualty analysis, related to 2020, conducted by the surveyors of
STB Italy
, the two main causes are collisions at sea (not coincidentally a few days ago as a result of a collision the Salona 37 Le Pelican sank) and groundings. Now that we are on the cusp of the 2021 boating season, here is an overview of what to look out for most.

Boat accidents: collisions and groundings top the list

Out of a sample of 365 accidents surveyed for 2020, according to the report shared by STB Italy, the leading causes of accidents are:

ACCIDENT TYPE

  • SINKINGS: 11
  • BAD WEATHER DAMAGE: 43
  • COLLISIONS: 131
  • MOTOR DAMAGE: 14
  • SITE AND TRANSPORTATION DAMAGE: 10
  • BURNS: 8
  • THEFT: 7
  • FIRE: 2
  • DOCK BUMP: 20
  • GROUNDING IN NAVIGATION: 87
  • OTHER: 32

Based on these data, some considerations can be made. The first is that collisions and grounding are the most frequent causes. Most often these are caused by distractions while browsing. In 2021, the year when so many newcomers will be going to sea for the first time, it will be crucial to keep the focus as high as possible.

Other types of accidents, which are quite frequent, are related to dock collisions and bad weather damage. Thefts and fires are declining, probably due in part to the increased technology that allows the vessel to be monitored at all times.

STB also reports how low the rates are for engine damage. According to STB appraisers, this indicates greater reliability of the engines and greater care in maintenance.
