The Splendido Mare Cup Spring races in Portofino, reserved for maxi and mini maxi yachts, were won by Rinaldo Del Bono’s Reichel Pugh 78 Capricorno, which closed the week of races with a string of first places. Behind Capricorno, the fast Luciano Gandini’s Mylius 80 Twin Soul B and Carlo Alberini’s Pendragon maxi yacht.

” I dedicate the victory of these races – declared Alessandro del Bono at the finish line – to Portofino and to my crew. We have always sailed together and, once again, we have demonstrated the value of a boat that is still very fast.

At the helm of the exceptional Capricorno was an equally exceptional helmsman, Flavio Favini. Capricorno and Favini are two names that go hand in hand in the history of Italian yachting. In 1995, they won the Admiral’s Cup together, the most important race for offshore boats at the time, the only Italian boat to achieve this result. Other historic names in Italian sailing and this crew were on board, such as Stefano Rizzi, Alberto Fantini, Tiziano Nava, Matteo Plazzi and Oscar Tonoli, names that have made the history of Italian offshore sailing and the America’s Cup.

” We’re very satisfied not only with the results achieved by our boats and crews after a year and half of stop due to the pandemic” – says Mylius CEO Valentina Gandini – “but also with the general climate in which the first restart of the sector took place. We hope that the performance of Mylius and the general spirit with which all the shipyards, owners and partners have faced the occasion will be a good omen to consolidate more and more the presence and cooperation with the Splendido Mare Cup and, more generally, for the new boating season”.
The third place went to Pendragon from Carlo Alberini’s Lightbay Sailing Team, another incredible yacht designed by Laurie Davidson – one of New Zealand’s best known and most successful yacht designers. On the water in Portofino Pendragon was able to count on the talent of Lorenzo Bodini and Slovenian champion Branko Brcin.

” On the eve of this beautiful event, well-organized by Yacht Club Italiano – I would never have thought I could aim for a top position,” explained Carlo Alberini, leader of the Lightbay Sailing Team. “Although I had unconditional confidence in my crew, I was aware that, due to the pandemic situation, the training hours were not what we would have liked: boats like Pendragon are very complex and being able to make the most of them is not something easy or obvious. It’s no coincidence that today, even though I was aware that I was risking third place, I would have liked to race, but at no time did the breeze give the feeling of being able to stretch out on the race course effectively. We say goodbye to Portofino with a smile on our faces, hoping to be able to do it again in Naples, where next weekend we will take part in the Regata dei Tre Golfi, a 150-mile long race across the Gulf of Naples”.
