Typically, the full-batten mainsail (i.e., with battens running across its full width) requires an efficient running system on the mast. The normal mainsail channel is not enough: a rail must usually be attached to the mast (low-profile and tubular section), above the channel, on which particular carriages or garrocci are run.
Look what the folks at Ronstan have come up with: Ballslide Batten System is a patented system that allows smooth, low-friction movement of your full-batten mainsail without the need for the additional rail on the mast.
INSTALLATION & BENEFITS
Installation is quick and easy: just insert the Ballslide trolleys directly into your tree’s existing gutter. Each carriage runs on two sets of rotating ball bearings, fully constrained to make hoisting and lowering the full-batten mainsail fast and smooth.
The advantages of the system are obvious: less weight, no additional cost from installing the rail on the shaft. And no complications: in boating, it is known, what is not there cannot be broken. In addition, the Ballslide batten carriages are easily removable, so you can rig even a regular mainsail without modification.
AN “ADAPTIVE” SYSTEM
Ballslide systems include the pen tablet, cues, intermediate carriages, and cue housings. They are available in two sizes, each with a range of adapters to make them compatible with a variety of common mast profiles on monohulls up to 18 m overall and multihulls up to 11 m.
