John Gilmour is 60, lives in Boston and has two passions: boating and the Mediterranean. For 20 years, he and his wife Jennifer have been spending 4 months in the Mediterranean on board their Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45. They choose the warmest months, from June 1st to July 3rd and from September 1st to October 31st. (photo source: https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isola_di_Ortigia).
In these 20 years, he has sailed the Mediterranean – “The Big Lake”, as he likes to call it – far and wide: “I have still to explore Lebanon, Israel and Albania”, he confesses during our chance meeting in a bar in Santa Margherita Ligure.
He likes the Mediterranean because it offers many urban marinas, which is impossible in the USA. “The ports seem like forts manned by guards, often far from cities and towns ”.John showed us from his logbook his very personal ranking of the 15 marinas included in the seaside resorts that he liked the most.
The following is his personal ranking, not in order of preference:
Ortigia, Siracusa, Sicily. I was stunned by the beauty of this place rich of charm and history. An unexplored world for me.
Maddalena, Sardinia. A lively pristine town. A true paradise in the Mediterranean.
Palma de Mallorca, Balearics. At the Real Club Nautico, in front of the Cathedral in the heart of a large seaside city.
Porto Ercole, Tuscan . I like “Tuscany touch” very much. Argentario is unique.
Portoferraio, Elba Island.
The Medici port is a work of art, it seems to be in the Renaissance and Elba is a small continent island.
Bonifacio, Corsica. Unbelievable!I am still excited at the memory of the first time I entered it.
Creta, Greece. Mooring in Chania and Rethymno. You can find the best of the island here.A land to visit in late summer.
Mentone, France. The charm of the French Riviera without the chaos.Italy close by as well as French social life.
Cesme, Turkey.Turkey I wasn’t expecting, I had the best thermal bath of my life.
Marseille, France.Moor at the “Vieux port” and then enter the alleys that smell of brackish and history .
Brindisi, Puglia. On the quay in front of the staircase with the Roman columns it is already an emotion for someone like me.
Saint Tropez, France.I found a place out of season on the quay in front of the Senequier bar, surrounded by beautiful women. What a charm!
Dubrovnik, Croatia. The most beautiful place where I moored, I felt like I was in the history of the Mediterranean.
Instabul, Turkey. In the Golden Horn, between East and West.Very exotic for a Yankee like me.
Cannes, France. I docked at vieux port and enjoyed the chaos of the Croisette.
