Epropulsion launches the first series of electric outboards that self-recharge (the propeller becomes a hydrogenerator when not in operation). There will be seven Epropulsion Evo models equipped with this technology in 2021.
The electric outboard for the dinghy or small boat (or, alternatively, the pod drive), is now booming. Epropulsion confirms this trend: in 2020 the company’s sales were +60% with two target markets: Western Europe and the United States. Now the company is launching the electric motor that recharges itself.
Epropulsion in 2021
Outboard Dinghy or Pod Drive up to 9 horsepower: your boat’s engines now recharge themselves. Epropulsion relies on self-charging electric motors that allow-in addition to normal charging by attaching to one’s boat’s battery pack or generator, reverse charging of the motor battery, at speeds between 4 and 10 knots.
Pod drive aside, which always works submerged and is the self-charging solution is already used (e.g., by Oceanvolt), the real innovation is related to the outboard. If you mount it as a main or auxiliary engine on a small boat, you will simply leave it down when sailing. On the other hand, if you use it as a dinghy engine when the sea is calm, you can simply leave the engine down and tow the dinghy to recharge it when sailing or motoring .
In both cases, at negligible friction.
Taking advantage of this technology will be ePropulsion’s Spirit and Navy product lines: the new models are the Spirit 1.0 EVO, Navy 3.0 EVO and Navy 6.0 EVO available from early 2021.
In addition to these new models, ePropulsion introduces 48-volt architecture, safety cuffs, a new ergonomic bar, and direct-drive brushless motors, resulting in better performance and greater noise reduction.
Now all outboards are built on a 48V platform, allowing more versatility. E-series batteries provide consistent performance, up to 3,000 charging cycles. The Spirit was the first commercially available floating battery.
Epropulsion: the security disconnect is now…wireless
The safety break is critical for safety, but in practical use many boaters find it inconvenient. Epropulsion replaces it with an armband that automatically shuts down the engine in the event of a man overboard. Up to 8 connections per motor will be available, completely wireless.
The new Evo bar
Epropulsion also introduces a new bar It is an ergonomic, convenient, responsive and adaptive bar that greatly enhances the navigation experience. The built-in display keeps users informed of key information such as power, voltage, remaining run time, and battery level, with a backlit display for easy nighttime use.
