Chi sperava che i quattro velisti inglesi dispersi in Atlantico tra Cape Cod (Massachussets) e le Azzorre dal 16 maggio scorso potessero essere ritrovati vivi, si è dovuto arrendere all’evidenza. Si era ipotizzato che i quattro avessero abbandonato l’imbarcazione a bordo delle zattere di salvataggio in dotazione: zattere che invece sono state ritrovate a bordo del relitto capovolto del First 40.7 “Cheeky Rafiki”, sul quale i velisti stavano ritornando in Inghilterra dopo aver partecipato alla Antigua Sailing Week.
UN’ODISSEA DALLA FINE TRAGICA
Le ricerche, che erano state interrotte dopo due giorni dall’incidente, per poi riprendere a seguito dei numerosi appelli arrivati dal web, coordinate dalla Guardia costiera statunitense in collaborazione con la rivista World Cruising Club, sono terminate dopo il ritrovamento della barca. Nessuna speranza per Paul Goslin, 56 anni, Steve Warren, 52, Andrew Bridge, 22, e James Male, 23.

Il primo ministro britannico David Cameron ha comunicato la propria solidarietà ai familiari delle vittime in un “tweet” : «I miei pensieri vanno ai familiari dell’ equipaggio della Cheeky Rafiki dopo la triste notizia del ritrovamento delle zattere di salvataggio».

Interrompere le ricerche dopo 2 giorni è un fatto che si comenta da solo anche con meteo difficile.

Years ago, I remember I have seen an unbelivable happening at a shipyard in Antibes, specialised in services for new boats: when the boat arrived in the yard (Voilier Services”for the usual services before launching, the keel literally “exploded” in hundreds of pieces. Of course, a phenomenon of un-released tensions in the “ghisa” or “fonte” material of the quille. Think if that happened while the boat was sailing after the launch!
Another time, I saw in Calvi (Corse) a similar accident: a boat stranded and waiting for a replacement “quille” after that its quille had been broken and partialli detached while sailing: just by miracle the skipper managed to arrive to Calvi.
It is surprising how unsafe are modern sailboats. There should be stricter specifications. The European community has adopted very sloppy rules. For instance, unsinkable boats are not considered at all and have no prvileges. I want to remember that the French Legislation used to favour unsinkable boats, indirectly incentivating them. The European legislation did not include those French articles into its own(very sloppy). As in many other fields, the Europeans Laws were made by the lobbies of the industrialists.
One advice: beware of sailboats built in the last roughly ten years! If you want real safety, buy an old and robust one, like an old ETAP, or old boats from shipyard of Northern Europe.
